Just Graduated?
Wondering what your future holds?
So after at least three years, hundreds of thousands of typed words, approximately 450 Jägerbombs’ and as many questionable choices on nights out; how are you going to make the change from university student to business professional?
It can be a daunting prospect considering your future but we wanted to help make that prospect a little less daunting by sharing some tips from our staff and candidates we have worked with over the last 6 years who have made the transition.
1 – Breathe, take your time, consider your options
No idea what you want to do? Not sure if the subject you studied is what you want to do? Our first piece of advice is to spend some time really thinking about what you want to do. See this as the amazing opportunity it is! Changing careers in later life is even more daunting with responsibilities, potential pay cuts and other challenges so make the most of it!
Speak to family, friends and lean on your network. Interested in going into IT Sales? Ask if any of your friends on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn can provide some guidance and advice (Not joined LinkedIn yet? Check out our blog on growing your network).
2 – See the Job Board as Step One
Once you’ve identified the type or role or industry you want to build a career within it is time to apply for jobs. Job boards are a brilliant way to find relevant jobs, understand what they involve and apply. It’s important to remember some adverts will have hundreds of views and potentially hundreds of applications. How are you going to stand out?
Make a note of any jobs you apply for, especially if the advert shows who to contact. if you haven’t heard anything after a few days don’t be afraid to contact the company or recruiter – either on LinkedIn, via email or pick up the phone! The best way to build a relationship is by speaking to someone!
3 – Research, Connect & Follow
Social Media is your best friend when it comes to searching for a job. Use LinkedIn to connect with the recruiter or hiring manager and take note of any interests they have on their profile. Follow the company to see their updates.
Glassdoor is another website worth checking out. Employees and candidates can review their time working for or interviewing with a company. Think of Trip Advisor but for companies!
Finding the companies LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or even Snapchat accounts will provide the best insight into the companies culture. You really won’t find a better way to gain this insight.
